Dynamic Modern city
Rotterdam is a dynamic city situated on the borders of the river Maas. Rotterdam had to rebuild from scratch after the heart of the city was destroyed during WW II. The Erasmus Bridge is one of the icons of Rotterdam. One of Holland’s most famous bridges, designed by Ben van Berkel, was officially opened by Queen Beatrix in 1996 as an important connection between the North and the South of Rotterdam. The so-called cube houses are also one of Rotterdam’s icons. Forty conventional houses were tilted 45 degrees to become the first cube-shaped houses of Holland. Rotterdam has an attractive contemporary art scene represented by exhibitions at : the World Art Museum, the Netherlands Photo Museum, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, the Kunsthal and the Netherlands Architecture Institute. One of Rotterdam’s many attractions include the ‘Diergaarde Blijdorp’, a huge zoo which includes an Oceanium, where visitors can walk through a tunnel surrounded by seascape and a variety of marine life.
Shopping
Rotterdam has a diversity of shopping districts. Due to its contemporary influence there are many cutting edge fashion boutiques concentrated around ‘Witte de Withstraat’. The main shopping area is located in ‘Lijnbaan’, where shops are open seven days a week. The luxury brands can be found at the Meent,, Van Oldenbarneveltstraat and Kruiskade . To experience the atmosphere of live bands, you are best heading for ‘Rotown’. Rotown has become an imminent part of Rotterdam’s night life. Rotterdam is a cosmopolitan city, so it has plenty of stylish cocktail bars.
