The Mont Saint Michel

The Mont Sant Michel is one of the wonders of the western world. This hill situated in Normandie is one of the most beautiful places to be visited in France. The hill forms a tower in the heart of an immense bay invaded by the highest tides in Europe.

It is said that at the request of Archangel Michel, the Bishop of Avranches built a church on the rock and some centuries after the Bennedictines settled a community. It has been one of the most important pilgrimage places in Europe (with Rome and Santiago de Compostela)

A beautiful medieval town that has been kept throught the ages and can only be visited depending on the tides, because when the tide goes up, the hill becomes and island, and only when it’s down it is linked to solid earth.

UNESCO has classed the Mont Saint-Michel as a world heritage in 1979 and it welcomes more than three million visitors a year. A marvellous place that not everyone knows about, so when hello becomes salut don’t forget to visit the fantastic abbey, the museums and the parish church.

A place called Chatsworth

Chatsworth House is a stately home in North Derbyshire, England. It is home to the Duke of Devonshire and his family  since 1549 and a great way to get to know how the nobles lived in England in the past centuries. Chartsworth includes house, garden, farmyard and an adventure playground. It is a mixture of culture, art, history and nature for all ages.

In the house there are more than a hundred rooms, some of them are open to the public: a recreation of the library, the guest rooms and the dinning room as they were two centuries ago. Some spectacular rooms, such as the hall and the oak room , represented Mr. Darcy’s home in some of the scenes of Pride and Prejudice (2005). Moreover, there is a great collection of art that includes the Virgin with veil, Egyptian and greek statues, a collection of minerals and some modern art paintings.

In the gardens you will be able to visit the Emperor’s Fountain, the cascade and its temple, a very difficult maze and the rocks. If the weather is good, a picnic would be the finishing touch for a fantastic day. If you are going with kids dont forget to see the animals in the farmyard!

Rome in summer

Rome is the perfect destination to go anytime of the year. Summer is one of the best because although it is a bit hot during the day time, you can always refresh yourself inside one of the hundreds of churches and palaces all around the city. Temples such as Santa Maria de Trastevere and Il Jesu invite you to think with their silence and freshness.

If you have seen all the beautiful buildings in the city, you can still cool down by dipping your feet in the water of one of the fantastic fountains that are scattered around in every square. We recommend that you visit the famous Fontana di Trevi very early in the morning so you can see the sculptures with calm.  Less famous, but with the all the charms of Rome is the Fontana di Tartaruge, beauty in simplicity.

Nights in the Italian capital can be enjoyed in summer more than in any other season: terraces where you will be able to eat delicious homemade pasta or pizza or have a drink after a tiring touristic day with a lovely roman ambiance. Book your hotel in Rome now with the best prices in Hotelopia!

July 14th: French national holiday

The storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 is the one that gave birth to the French national holiday. That morning of the eighteenth century, the citizens of Paris took up arms and departed from the Invalides and went to the Bastille, which was by then a royal fortress.
This is one of the most important landmarks of the French Revolution. The building was completely demolished during the following months.
Since then, every year, 14 of July celebrates the storming of the Bastille and the Feast of the Federation, which established the new Constitution in 1790.
But it will be during the Third Republic, when Gambetta decided to formalize this date as a national holiday of the Republic.
Today, July 14 keeps its official appearance, particularly with military parades that take place with the national anthem “La Marseillaise” Isle of mullet in the background. In Paris, the armies are going down the Champs-Elysees under the watch of the french head of State.
But everywhere in France balls, illuminations and fireworks will give the party a family-friendly dimension.

If you’ve never been in the city of lights, you feel like visiting the Louvre, climb the Eiffel Tower, or walk down the Champs Elysees, seize this opportunity and book a hotel in Paris: http://www.hotelopia.com/france/paris/

Sevilla in summer

It is said that summer is not the best time of the year to visit Seville: sevillians leave the city and it is very hot (up to more tan 40º C degrees in the shadow). Althought that may be true there are some reasons why visiting Sevilla can also be good.

  1. Less queues! There are less tourists in summer than there are in autumn and spring so therefore there are less probabilities of having to wait queues to enter the Giralda or the torre del oro (Golden Tower).
  2. Velá de Santa Ana : From the 21st to the 28th of July, Triana celebrates a party for Saint Anne, a religious celebration that is now a big party in the middle of the summer: chats with friends, activities, good food and an religious offer to the Virgin in Santa Ana’s Church. A fantastic time to get to know a bit more about people from the other part of the river and to enjoy the fantastic views of the city from the calle Betis.
  3. Alcazar Nights (Noches de Alcazar): The Real Alcazar is one of the places you can’t miss when visiting the city. In summer, there are concerts in the gardens in which the beaty of the stage surrounds the sounds of jazz, pop, flamenco or classical music.

So it is not all bad news, Sevilla is hot in summer, that is true but there are a lot of things to do in this city that would make your visit different from the rest, enjoy the hot summer nights in Sevilla!
